A cable is cut, crushed, burnt or hanging loose.
Exposed cable usually turns up after building work (a drill through a wall, a cable cut while chasing), after a fitting has been pulled off, or where an old installation has been extended without care. In rented flats it is often a light fitting removed by a previous tenant and left hanging.
If you are not sure which circuit it is on, the main switch is the safe answer.

While you wait
Emergency electrical work is published in Maltese price guides at €50 to €100 an hour at night and at weekends. You hear the charge before anyone sets off.
A call-out is €20 to €60 in the day and emergency labour €50 to €100 an hour out of hours, in the published Maltese guides. Making a cable safe is usually a short job; a proper repair is priced before it starts.
| Job | Unit | Band | What is in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard call-out | per visit | €20 – €60 | daytime visit; labour on top at the hourly rate |
| Emergency electrician | per hour | €50 – €100 | nights, weekends and public holidays |
| Fault finding / RCD tripping | per job | €60 – €150 | diagnosis of a tripping RCD, dead circuit or intermittent fault |
A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.
